For Poetry’s Sake
The urge to write poetry
Is inborn, like prophecy
Not all poetry wants to
Be storytelling, or rhyme
Or sound like other poets
We might have heard or ignored
Neither does poetry require a topic
Or a message, it can be
Just a matter of lovely language
Just beauty on the stray and loose
It doesn’t need to suffer
For the page or owe the pen anything
Poetry is of so subtle a spirit
We might as well discuss with our soul
What to write next, it’s learned
Through decades of loving
Words and having an itch
To write when nothing else is going on
Speculative metaphysics and art?
Try poetry, and unremember your life
Create layers on top of memory
Write poems, create destiny
Out of the fictions of your mind
It’s like a spell and a sacred hearing
Learning poetry by heart is then
Learning yourself by heart
And there is nothing like
Loving yourself in a poem.
This post has set my busy mind to thinking, particularly the last stanza.
Ah yes, what does it allow you to ponder Belinda?
The way I write for one. I often rhyme, which isn’t a bad thing, but it is good to step outside ones comfort zone. More importantly, I believe I have some self-exploring to do about my topics and the “myself” that I put into them. This made me ponder…I like when posts have that effect.
Great poem! I feel I’m mirrored through your words… Greattttttttttt!
Extraordinarily beautiful 😊.Especially last two lines, I just loved them.
Yes the last lines, I’m not sure why they do that
“Unremember your life” powerful words to the man with kind (but daring) eyes 🙂
Yes Mim, I’m a great fan of forgetting, every minute you think about the past takes away from your appreciation of the present and your anticipation of the future…
I really enjoyed this one. I feel it helps me remember that poetry can be accessible, simple, and free. Sometimes, I think I get too bogged down in what I think poetry “needs” to be or in some arbitrary rules. And so I give up on writing it.
Yes it can, and if we call something divine, we begin to see it everywhere
Reblogged this on "A Curious Mind".

Wuji, those two stanzas in particular stand out to me. We have all known moments that we intuitively know them to be true. Thank you.
That’s really good Simon
