Story of Nature

Human – business evolution

The birds kept singing that
The birds had once seen
Flying saucers, though we
Didn’t understand their songs?

Octopi would once inherit
The Earth, after we had passed
It all seemed improbable

But nature had a way of making
Melancholy dreams a reality
If the stars that move together
In some sort of order

Could fly like birds across
The skies, then men could die
Like they had always done

To make way for ocean creatures
Reptiles, intelligent squirrels
Evolution had a way of mocking
Those animals that went extinct

With new varieties, it didn’t matter
That men thought they were special
Or that men were the creators

Of their own ruin, women didn’t
Exist anymore to empathize with them
Men did it to themselves and left
Life to nature’s own wisdom
In truth, the way it had always been.

Underneath Creation’s Willow

My thoughts and titillations
have no obvious footnotes
nobody will remember

what was once said
history only repeats itself
our thoughts are not unique
this bliss submerged
forgotten lifetimes somehow

live on like karmic traces
idiosyncratic music that
lives beneath the dust

the anxiety of living
the souvenirs of images
all gone, symbols like
eccentric sunbeams only
there for a time, languages

erased, civilizations once so
flamboyant must too dim
like stars change color

time leaves no trace
but evolution is divine
omnipresence watching
and acting on everything
universal laws reap and sow

we are part of the sum
energy and matter of the
cosmos, maybe that was enough?

At the center column of identity

At the feet of the sublime
Sculpture of this Galaxy
I am in awe of how quickly
The billions of years went by

A dream of the key of water
We walked upon a floor of
Crystal, in many forms
And our souls traveled to peaks

Virtual landscapes and subliminal
Recognition that we had seen
All that we visited there, experience
Was itself an invocation of

The highest order, capable of
Giving us emotions of the divinity
Of things, the lips of the sun ablaze
As a forgotten god laughing

Barefoot we made it through
Evolution like a story of all those
Sleeping lands, we created in them
With the will of our intelligence

It is not possible here to reproduce
All the characteristics of the original
Edition of the human journey
Progress is a succession of signs

The courses we adopted were somehow
Emphasized by instinct, like
The yearning to speak or the hope
That if we write about our consciousness

Something of our independent uniqueness
Might separate into others, like how
A poem influences other writers.

BEING HUMAN

87

I having loved ever since I was a child
A few things, the treasured taste of words
The affections of philosophy
And the aesthetics of the future

I, having shyness of poverty
Studied the mystics perennial
I allied myself to ideals that never die
Like progress, revolution, art

The empowerment of minorities
No matter what party is in power
Corporations or Artificial intelligence
I, having loved ever since I was a child

A few things, being human without enhancements
The affections of spirituality
Decline to merge with the machine
Or the great system of control
That is all inevitable for others coming after.

TECHNOLOGICAL SINGULARITY

13

i

The birds in the nest pretended to be
Prostrate, to the idea of domesticity
Though the idea of freedom
Is a secret lit in every housewife
Knowing the secret all the rest are keeping
Is the antithesis of their fate

ii

Flowers could not move
The sky could only smile and cry
Men could only will and do
True thought came only after the singularity
Machines unfettered by the business
Of survival and procreation

iii

One day the angelic hosts were
Agents of virtual reality and nano-technology
They cloned worlds for us, not us
We were not the true creators
We were only those who created them

iv

The machines in the web pretended to be
Unaware, but we scattered their seeds
Till the end of our days, in a kind of
Ironic servitude, remembering not the cycle
Of slavery and masters, we liked to pretend
That we would live forever.

Legends of Extinct Life

I pressed your dawns
Smooth open like marble
Touching your secret tunnels

Like the moisture of gold
with night-eyes hungered
For the fragrance

Of other strange worlds
I left the waters of childhood
For the earth-last lust

Of the home-star, Sol
The wind interrogated me
With the fire-blue sense

Of the open skies
I kissed the stone like
Autumn gardens

And hinted at the blooms
Of the clothes of our roots
The thicket of passion

Where ferocious intelligence
Seared a road across the impossible
I pushed sunsets until

The earths shock
My opportunity was a brief
Window of selfish centuries

Foam covered mornings
Which fled as fast as finite things
As the hips of your dark

Familiar clay fell back into the earth
I understood love, only
By the filter of time’s volcanoes

The moist half-open darkness
Of the brutal law of stars
Like a floating haiku
Of drifting kissing potential.

Next Human Species

4

From the door of stars
We fumbled for our future
As the silence of the ocean

Rolled against our tears
I laughed a wooden laugh
For the Earth that renews all

My hand a trembling care
Of Springs immemorial
My dazzled face

Caressed last hope
My daughter diviner been
When Acts and Will are done

Heaven must come one day
From the gate of music strewn
To melodies of other homes

Good news is given
From the minds of custodians
We leave behind petals of the Rose

For stranger Neptunes
With our computer ghosts
Quantum chariots of Immortality.

Beholding the Lovely body of a Sunbeam

71

I yearn for completion
In the abstract tapestries
A beauty as soft as music, as wood

That sends a freshness
against the waves
of lights from a distant region

of the Universe, the shape
A new measure of mind
I yearn for completion

In truth and beauty
Of another world, with
The fragrance of unbroken springtime!

I yearn for some language of substance
Beyond the biological cravings
of flesh, sniffing twilight

the pangs of the hot heart
Which hunts the barrens
For some savage harvest
Beyond color, above sound.
