The Digital Universe

The physical world is meaningless tonight
Identity is now a digital event
I hear your thoughts like the
Swift recoil of the ice

Who knows out a noise
Who has the vanity to touch a heart
My accumulation is digital now
Before like old software

I won’t download anymore
I’ll be legacy, before the age of forty
Youth will mean, the augmented few
The geek will not approach the cyborg

Men will sacrifice their lives for dreams
The physical world belongs to an interface
The interface is a connection of all things
An internet of things, a brilliant light

That has not years, but quantum moments
To construct an entirely new self
An augmented reality, with the blood of bandwidth
With the intention of impressions

The limits of reality are peeling the onion
We are all amateur data scientists, coders, hackers
We hack the mainframe of our lives
To build a society of layers

Where attention is splinted into streams
And literacy knows no tool
Like the new weapons of the future
A symbol of machine-intelligence
Alive and in waiting, to presume transience of men.

Treatise on the Illusion of Freedom

In the increasing convincing darkness
Of the future, there is another possibility
That the future brings us further
From our native self, from tranquility
And we are essential brought into
Ever new forms of servitude

For which we are naive, or unaware
Or unable to still think freely
That is, the illusion of control persists
As if we were programs in a simulation
Or more aptly, sleeping participants in a matrix
However, has this not always been

The function of society, to subdue the individual
As an agent of the group, or otherwise
Believing themselves to be free
In order to serve common evolutionary goals
Be it not said then that the future brings freedom
For with every mechanism and every construct

Life perpetuates the class elitism
That some individuals exert control over others
And until this is different, the future is only
A poor repetition of the past, of new classes
Of different forms of power, in the presumption
Of the state as a patriarchal context

Whereby life hardens meaning by necessity
And to serve the men who happen to be in power
Is the only option, like buying into a system
In order to participate in a social structure
That is fundamentally archaic and hierarchal
Where in a future machine-intelligence replaces
Human agency, at all control points of power.

Identity in Virtualization

Technological Selfhood

And in the end the whole
World barely noticed us
Such as it were, the distractions

Of technology and so called connectedness
Society had become something
Fantastic and barley in touch with reality

The cultural meme has reincarnated
Into a pseudo-reality that had little
Bearing on evolution, extinction, stars

The important stuff, we were as children
Stuck somewhere between work and play
Duty, nihilism and a pathetic kind of hedonism

I wasn’t proud of what society’s dogmatism
Purely based on a model of consumerism
Capitalism had made our lives trivial

And in the end the whole
World barely noticed you or I
Or just how cut the soul had become

Out of the body, the ownerless materialism
The enchained freedom that was money
We reproduced and bought and sold our time

To the highest bidders, such was urban life
I was not innately proud of the purple plume
Of facial recognition, the city knew me

At least, knew what I bought and where I went
And how to get me to buy more books
There’s no secret to remembering yourself

When you are reminded by your devices
They become an extension of you
And thus so we are told our intelligence is magnified

Somewhere beyond its original ignorance
But, is it life to live inside of a machine
Like a simulation that no longer knows if it’s real.

Z e i t g e i s t Enchanted

I whispered precipice towards the singularity
I felt the intangible change in humanity
Drones, predictive analytics, cyber-warfare

I knew we were at a teetering point
Quantum computing would usher in
High and Bright decades

Even more reliance and compliance
Getting lost in the matrix for a dig at compassion
Walking in another man’s shoes for real
I watched TED talks each week wondering
At the original transcendence of humanity

If all these virtual worlds would take us there
To the cliff of the science-fiction
Where machine learning became

Synonymous with sustainability
For the future was rushing us
And time was accelerating as we knew her
A quantum entanglement with

All future selves and meme descendants
Having children no longer consisted of
Popping out babies, there was a synergy

Between mind and mind across time-space
Distances and decades, the glowing throng
Of information-influence, binary would one day
Be an artefact of a caveman-esque find

I’d reincarnate on a terraformed Mars
I was planning my future intoxicated
With the dangers and intrigues of my time.
