Psalm 8 – Capitalism

O Lord my God, let me not say
Let me not lie, “my God is best”
For each values experience uniquely
Selah. How many Gods have we

Invented? Rending to piece the idols
Of other gods, for our own
Cherished idols? We might worship
Money, but even the God of the

Marketplace, becomes false with debt
The Lord shall judge the people
The Nations shall suffer their karma
The Americas shall be torn apart

O Lord, let it not be said we were
Good Christians, praising only our
Version of right, our emblems of patriotism
Let it be known, we were also cruel

Unfair, corrupt, as any other Masters
That Lorded over other men, that filled
The realms with images of our likeness
Making the world love money, like we did

Capitalism was the plague that we proliferated
We rewarded evil, until the corporations
Became the high priests of our home countries
Feudal, full of disdain for the common people

Barons, full of spite for justice or freedom
O Lord, in thine anger, if though shall destroy
Parts of this world in thy holy crusade
Let history show the white man
Persecuted others to be like him.

Brief history of religion

When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.
~ Mahatma Gandhi

69

i would be as ignorant as the future
that forgives and forgets the past
as sublime as the dawn

that has looked down on towns
as the stars fade and the moon
is plucked by the ocean from the sky
I would be as ignorant as this planet

that dreads not but revolves around itself
these countries of profit and civil
unrest, fighting history, quarrels between gods

invented by men who would wield power
the kind of show that leads to a unified death
flame under flame, flower of the heaven-fold
obeying your will to die for a name

obedient to the scripture where my ancestors died
and i lived, because of cowardice and
because I wanted see another sunset, another dawn.

Treatise on Attar II

77

The home we seek is in eternity
my spirit has wandered
across endless countries

I have experienced
the pouring of so much grace
to live, to love, and i have looked

everywhere, for Your love –
then suddenly I am filled with it
as a mystic ecstatic with the source

i have felt famine in my veins
and been a slave among peoples
but my prayers have been my light

my poetry the last drop of devotion
that was my strength, when i was weak
my life was the opportunity that was given

if I ignore it, if I waste it –
i will only turn to dust
either way, i will one day live in eternity,

as a spark or a cloud or a gem
or a filament of gold after stars
kiss each other coyly.

Treatise on How to Pray

75

When I pray
I speak with my heart’s
Constant Guest
God the host of the galaxy

I measure success differently
I compete with myself
In how well I can encompass others
Rejoice with their spirits

When I pray
I no longer pray for myself
But I seek to expand my heart’s natural
Limits, to enlighten its foundations

Very few seekers can afford
Two Lines to Heaven from their chi
One, from their soul’s unshakable trust
Two, from their spirit’s breath of devotion

Hope has no real intention
But to remind us to be connected
I have a meditation-appointment
With God, in small hours of morning

In late hours of the night
I let in the higher worlds
To swarm in me beyond my imagination
One simple truth to feel alive:

You are bound to know God’s will
If you allow God to become real to you.

Treatise on God’s Plan for Man

74

There are these ultimate absurdities
That make God’s troubles ours
The animal in man never cared for him
The divine in man never won him over yet –

God was not meant to live through man
Man was meant to be mistaken
God does not therefore think of man constantly
Though he loves us equally

Neither of us shall live close to him
So then is it worth to be a sleepless dreamer?
Of God-dreams, unrealized by our orphan-tears?
True, I do not know who I am

So, how shall I ever know my God
There are these ultimate absurdities
That only evolution can solve
The miracle of loving brings us on

To a future where light knows how to brighten
When the Divine in man might liberate
The human from the animal
The soul from the biological machine.

Treatise on the Inner Counselor

94

God felt me smile
And gave me Bliss
She is my outer Coach

Therefore I smile as I succeed
She is my inner Coach
Therefore I have danced

Before the infinite proceeds after me
I entertain God on my footsteps clear
And underestimate things such as

Her Compassion-Beauty
And I overestimate Man’s cruelty
But humanity has its own plan

God felt me smile at her fate
And gave a few of us Bliss
With promise-power, warmth

That is spread from generation to generation
I chose not to understand God
But she lived in me anyway

Yesterday’s God had to be reframed
She gave me jokes, cosmic humor
A way out of my little mind:

I am giving God, in lyrical strains
A little problem; my useless life
That listens earnestly to the life of others.

Treatise on Solace

71

God wanted you
To go to Him untouched
But what did you do?
You know!
You went to him
With the final love

That comes from too much suffering
You went to God as a human being
Tired of being good
Tired of the sensation of hope
You felt the breath in you
Was increasing in hesitation
And sleeplessness, so you went

To God, To love you sleeplessly
And it worked!
Like an unfinished Dream of god
You stood, half-perfect
With thoughts that were
An unending Reality of God

You woke up, struck then by
The God-Hour of your species
You took the last step, with
A heart of gratitude
Smooth solace for the chaos

Mistaking earth for Heaven
You loved the world with new eyes.

Treatise on Self-Transcendence

69

I shall show God
By acts of humility
Because you are the Lord of my life
I was built by nature’s finery

God’s Compassion-feet
Thrive in my bones
My blood has soul
My water has spirit

I do not interfere
In God’s funny Affairs
Every day I let Him
Create a new world

Destroy an old world
That is what Divinity does
Changing by God-Satisfaction
Natural laws, so why pray?

I shall show God’s works
By selfless surrender
That is my final act of self-transcendence
To frighten the animal in me

My God is all Justice
To enlighten the human in me
My God is all Compassion
Simplicity, compassion and humility

Enough of God’s Lion-Power
Back to God’s Deer-Speed.

Treatise on Surrender to the Future

68

My Beloved,
I came into the world
With empty hands,
Unaware of what treasures

I might find here –
I cam from God
The Eternal Dreamer
Ready to know my Immortal Lover

She was the happiness-gift
Of a devotion I valued most
She was the bliss-spark
Of a surrender I happened upon

Naturally, as naturally
As I was born to live and die –
My Beloved,
My minds wants to invent

A new God, with pretty new doctrines
But my heart wants to discover
Something eternal, untarnished
By bloody histories, civil unrest

My dear Nature,
Please warm me before
Evolution finds my kind extinct
My gratitude-heart,

Can only bare so much
And I feel your heart
Even in the carelessness of all
We have done, all we do

The miracle of my chase with God
Can only end in the realization
Of your secret wishes
In my descendants.

Treatise on God II

94 love

Here, bear testimony, you are your own best witness
Do unto others as you
Would have them to do you
Love must be sincere, therefore

Cling to what is good
Be compassionate at all times
Love has no intent to harm
The fulfillment of the law is kindness

Mercy, charity, service, helpfulness
Hope, love and faith together move –
But the greatest of these is love
And Love for God’s work in us

Dear friends, let us love on another
For love comes from God
Everyone who loves has been
Born God and knows God

There is no fear in love, therefore
Perfect love drives out all fear, anxiety
Fear punishes, love gives
Say yes to love, and no to fear

At every juncture of your life
Here, bear testimony, the love in you
Will be your own judge and jury
Great love is not only for self, family, friends

But for all beings, all creatures
There is no chosen people, no right nation
All planets together move in the galaxy
A friend loves at all times, whoever forgets God

That is their concern, for God so loved the world
There we were created to love the world too
No one can serve two masters, so listen
Inside your heart, and serve the true soul

For in thine own conscience thou findst
The truth of thy love, and all fulfillment therein.

Treatise on God

63

And, behold, I am with thee
As the planets live amongst the stars
Behold, I hold thee, as the trees
Keep the Earth together, the air fresh

I am God, nature pure devoid of scripture
I am Love, creative, a power of evolution
I can do everything through
He who gives me strength

I can love everyone through
She who gives me the ability to love
And, behold, I am not alone
For God so loved the world

And we each have a spark of God
And whoever believes in the stars
Shall not perish but have eternal life
For in the stars awaits our destiny

And we know that in all things God works
For the good of those who crave the light
Of the future, do not conform any longer
To the pattern of the past world, it is gone

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything
By prayer and petition, present your love
To the Galaxy, the one you were born into
For it is by grace you can know God

Through faith, and not for yourself,
By the fruit of the spirit in love, joy, peace, patience
Kindness, goodness, faithfulness;
It is the gift of God, therefore I urge you

Brothers, our grace is sufficient to confess
That we want to be part of the new creation
It is love which changes the world, after all,
Keep your love free from the love of money

Live simply, give yourself fully, until the Holy Spirit
Comes unto you, let yourself be a witness
May the God of hope fill you with overflowing trust
Until resurrection finds you ready and purified.

Treatise on Jesus of Nazareth

90

But I say to you, Love your
Enemy as you would your Neighbor
Your Neighbor as you would your Mother

Do not persecute these or yourself
Father who is in heaven; he would not approve
Be compassionate for all creatures

Do not let your hearts be troubled
Trust in yourself, as the universe incarnate
Trust also in others, as if they were you

Ask for it and these be given unto you;
Search for it, and she will find you –
Love, like the universe opens all doors for you

A new command you were given:
Love one another, as nature gave you life
Free of possibility, full of potential

For the universe loved her many children
Eternal life endures, like a lover
Whose objects are not limited, but unlimited

Whose bliss is unconditional, not only for thy family
but I say to you, Love more if you want
To be closer to perfection, keep only possessions

In your heart, that is thy only commandment
For what shall it profit a being, who forgets how to love?

Treatise on Socrates

54

Knowing nothing, I am wisdom
Beginning to wonder, by all means
Marrying my time on the Earth
contentment being the wealth of my nature
Since all men’s souls are immortal

What should I fear, tell me?
I’ve got a good wife, I’ve become happy
though if I took a lover, it would be
Philosophy, that dead pursuit
Of men who like to admit

That true wisdom is following our nature
Sincerely, God knows best what is
Good for us, and be as a child
For an honest man is always a child
Avoiding the bareness of a busy life

Let him that would move the world
First move himself, becoming one’s own teacher
Wonder is the beginning of wisdom
Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle
The self is its own casing of ignorance

Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events
Weak minds discus people, therefore learn
To gossip of higher stuff, an education of living.

A Treatise on Michelangelo

52

A man paints with his brains
Not with his hands
A woman makes music not with her fingers
But with her heart
Death and love move the artist

We all labour to the genius
Of our own absolute love
But we must learn eternal patience
For faith in oneself is always
the best and safest course

In this brute world of circumstance
Our fate can change in an hour
If we have been pleased with life
We should not be displeased with death
Since all art comes in the end

From the same master
Still then would I hope that
I may always desire more than
I can humanly accomplish, therefore
That the art of God may shine in me

Not for any personal glory but
For the human good, for that spirit
I live and love in God’s peculiar light
And my soul can find no staircase to heaven
Unless it be through Earth’s loveliness.

Treatise on Kongzi (Confucius)

48

Dears, life is really simple
but we insist on complication
Brothers, the will to win or the
desire to succeed is really only
the thirst to realize your full potential

Do not let it blemish your dignity
real knowledge and virtue is
To know the extent of one’s ignorance
and the power of circumstance to make
Another act the way they do

Sisters, silence is a true friend
who will never betray you, should you
need her in the stillness of your soul
find her out, when it is not the time to act

Dears, it does not matter how slowly
you go as long as you do not stop
Find in your hearts the endurance
of the ancients, of ancestors that
we may one day arrive at descendant divinity

to this end we must meditate on good thoughts
on virtues, on right action, on the world at large
the superior person understands the morality
In every instance, the seed of love
that must serve as our final teacher.

Treatise on Sri Aurobindo

46

Hidden in nature is secret God
Inherent in humanity, is a universal being
Children of the future, descendent divinity
Whatever we are now, is just a step –

Spirituality is embedded in our brains
The creative word burns from our soul
To do good in an ordered galaxy
So what is the method of the emergence

Of our own divinity, our higher evolution?
Each of us must work to this aim
That a superman may emerge
Out from our animal ignorance

How to approach the infinite from
A standpoint of freedom and unity
When the world we live in appears
Against the manifestation of a new world

Until we arrive at the solution, we must
Learn to live within, not be shaken by outward
Uncertainty, foolishness, corruption, chaos
True love or knowledge comes from purity and silence.

That Faith that Came After Hope Departed

23

I have seen faith, felt her
Gently on my face like morning light

I have gazed into her
Naked outright sun like a child
The word ‘faith’ means
An experience of elevation
To that which is properly invisible
A dewdrop or a floating leaf

The yearning for horizons unclear
Even if you dreamed, with open eyes
The faith of the future would
Persuade you that something special

Is near, a luminous speckled light
From some mysterious source

I have seen faith, felt her
Like water on my thirsty lips
I have thought her in my mind
Bringing me closer to nature

Where a brief second seemed
To last a year, I have been that flower
That forgot how not to bloom.

Don’t Hope for Things Elsewhere

21

Hasty and awkward were those
Human moments, lived like
An interruption of the Gods
Fate always intervenes in the

Pauses, between free-will & circumstance
We are all symbols of the times
We live in, we’ve wasted our
Human potential, while others

Maybe out-did us, we will always
End up not finding the new country
This city will always pursue you
We will walk the same streets

Know the same old friends
There is no ship for you
No road to take you elsewhere
Hasty and awkward you will

Find yourself a countryman
Of the family, country, era
In which you were born
On a particular planet among

Millions, hush up now:
The black ruins are perfectly normal.

Poem from the 21st Century

15

My inner artist burns
to build a new world
past the last revolution
for something special like

Freedom and equality for all
from an umbrella of social concern
it is the youth that change
the status quo, certainly not

The hooks of flowers, the marriages
family builders, who must
play their accustomed niche
the biological imperatives

where years blur in ancestral worship
descendant divinity, evolution’s
meditation on forms: self-replication
my inner artist burns

For this corrupt economy to fail
past the years of anarchy
for something special like
an ethical communal setting

It is the youth who envision
a better future, the elders
no longer have the courage
to act upon once lofty ideals.

Another Elegant Poet’s Rite

74

I heard you became a poet
After many miracles
Of the power of words
You decided to take on

A magical identity
a mythical persona of renown
to pause at the door of art
Before stepping through

I heard you became a poet
After finding ancient sanctuary
With many old books
It was a transfigured community

Of self-teaching the way
To universal truth, where
A few pagans found in nature
All that was needed for songs

It may be placebo, but the idols
We create last a lifetime.

It is your choice

18

Embrace mystery, relish in the unknown
rejoice in the experience of knowing less
and loving more, the infinite depth

of oneness in multiplicity, unity in diversity
The Universe is mysteriously great
rejoice in the metaphors of large and small

and loving more, creation is boundless
once you have started appreciating miracles
the mundane seems slow and unremarkable

once you have started seeing beauty everywhere
the beloved in everyone, bliss in every touch
ugliness and disharmony disappear –

Embrace creation, relish in the event of witnessing
if you start looking at life with a formidable joy
how much of your sad existence would disappear?

I Admonish Thee

41

Hope is the circumference of life
Faith is the circle of the fall
Creation the mighty exponent of
Oxygen and water, blood and time

History notes love is posterior
To fate, that seal of light
That spreads what we were
And mixes it with the cycles
*
That never stop, only recede to start again
Revelation cannot end with
Going blind, we learn to listen
Silence is the jewel of posterity

The future, the brimming Deity in our eyes
Perhaps we ask too large a place
No less to explore the furthest skies
Hope remains the circumference
*
Faith ends all beliefs of smaller bundles
Creation the happening where we exist
Open to all accidents of loss
Yes, oxygen, water, blood, time
These too will be taken away.

Prayer Untitled

35

Prayer is the last response
Of presence when life is denied
So to remain quiet

Is sometimes next to God’s ear
Watching and listening
The last apparatus

Of apparent prosperity
For to own is not permanent
Anything can be taken away

A spirit-diamond trance
Can problem solve
The symmetry of misfortune

Prayer is the last response
Of an unconditional force of happiness
Too infinite is consequence

For us to seize destiny by the throat
Prayer is the easiest sport
When our slow capacities deploy

A crude response to vivid nature
So to act is not always wise
Then do we notice things overlooked

Our mind italicized by light
That darkness be prerequisite
To spirit’s final room

As narrow time’s jostle between
What we once called life & death
Bent to water, till we died

Prayer is the last response
When belief no longer regulates
The perception of our undue significance.
