Treatise on Revolution (Kabir)

70

When the bride is one with her lover
Who cares about the wedding party?
When the divine is what you hunger for
What can’t you not stand in this world?

Throw away all religions, all corporations
And trust in a love of humanity and all life –
For history troubles us with her scriptures
And systems simply trap us in their ruin

Admire the diamond that can bear
The hits of the hammers of time
Plunge into the truth, find out who the
Inner Teacher is, enough of false authorities

Hang the body and the mind between
The arms of the Beloved, in the ecstasy
Revolution, where the world can be reborn
Into something less like a stubborn master
Into a world where there are no slaves.

Treatise on Kabir II

65

Are you looking for me?
I am in the next seat
Your heart jumping
As our shoulders touch

As our heads turn with smiles
In a moment that is a feast
Not found in temples, holy books
Not found in rituals, or authorities

Not in teachers, or sayings
It is the living divinity of life –
I’ve burned my own house down
With my yearning for you?

Ecstatic beloved. of divine partnership
Admire the diamond that can
Bear the hits of poverty and loneliness
It is the human spirit, bundled

In the market of profitless meditation
Lo! I am beside thee, and for an instant
Our minds are love, in a moment of time
Are you looking for me?

Student, tell me, what is God?
Is he but an empty dream, the soul too?
A garden of flowers O lost friends!
In your body is the garden of flowers

Take your seat on the thousand
Petals of the lotus, and gaze on Infinite Beauty.
The ultimate unbounded cannot be lured
By virtue, philosophy – but only by

Purity, freedom, emptiness, the silence
Of non-attachment, the glory
Of a lover who sees his beloved everywhere
There, an Eternal Fountain has no words.

Songs to the Mystic Bride

7

I long for the bliss of divine union
the unity that washes my brain in delight
it enters me completely and empties me

of little things that I once fret about –
I lived terrible lonely years without That
gazing into darkness, year after year

If ever I am meant to meet you again
I will so fiercely cling to faith in my heart
I will melt into you, and you will lead me

to the fathomless surrender of personality
there, in world-dissolving prostration
I will heal and learn to see illusion & reality

with eyes of rebirth and hope of wise cycles
I long for the bliss of hungry overmind
satisfied oversoul, transcendent and blazing

free of our little cares, there, i will sing for you
Songs of union, before and after despair.

The Last Flight

120

The bhakti path never ends
Its tenderness watches over you
The ego disappears in surrender
Like it always has, immersed in the other

The mystical ‘other’ who is always there
In a universe of leaping up to
Divine water, ethereal light
The joy of looking for the Beloved
*
In common matter, the fish of time
I know you are ready for the last flight
The spectacle of the world was difficult to find
The Swan will fly away all alone

Back into the Divine, when our life
Span is complete, who shall know
If we are any wiser, any more tender?
The messengers of fate will say

What they will say, and we shall go
According to our doing, our attributes
We are disciples of nature, god, evolution
Who are we to say if we are united or estranged
&
The bhakti path never ends
It stretches on into lifetimes in various forms
Who are we to hope for birth or enlightenment
The Beloved steers us where we are meant to go.

Prayers from the Galactic Center

My lord takes his delight in stars
In the middle regions of the sky
In blessed spirits that mirror light
Radiant with the music of the night

My Queen takes her movement
From the waves, from the rain
Her wondrous effulgence
*
In each of her beloved thoughts
It pours and pours and never ceases
She is nature without judgment
Cycles without wait, nectars of belonging

Vaster than global consciousness
On that shore that is not a city
My lord and my Queen reside in thee
With pure white of white, delight and fire.

Having Crossed Many Rivers

Having crossed the river
Of future to ancient past
Where will you go, O friend?

The world is what it is
There’s no road to tread
But contemporary lives

Life has neither a beginning or an end
To an individual
In a moment there is no time

We only invented ‘time’
To speak of the sky, the river, the boatman
But the truth is we are

The water, will always be the water
In the same ocean
You search for yourself in the world

In vain, having forgotten how to swim
Like an angel, how to surrender like a star-fish.

New World Disorder Illness

76

Brothers, I’ve seen some
Astonishing sights
Invisible to my eyes before
A lion in my soul kept watch

For the signs, of the end of the world
Sisters, I’ve felt the fish spawning
Life on the firm branches of new trees
The sky lit in ambivalent temperatures

Solar flares that shared the
Restlessness of the times
The Environment didn’t like
How our key fit into the universe

Extinction seemed the logical
Way to press these misfits off the Earth
Brothers, I feel our hour is ticking down
Every species has its time to shine

I’ve seen some hopeless events
A world corrupt in mismanaged imaginary wealth
Some living in outrageous luxury
While the majority live in squalor

Brothers, I wasn’t born in a just world
Though I wonder if I have children
If they will have a city to live in at all
That does not bear roots of blood
Whose civil unrest won’t swallow them all.

Chew Slowly

63

To myself, the one
Beloved who I have become one with
Chew slowly
Live without regard
For the opinion of others
For in myself
I’d rather eat miracles
To be unified, to love
Beauty, to thrill with purity
To myself, the one
Isn’t so far away, to live simply
Without demand, to give
Daily to the brotherhood of Man
Chew slowly
The time as it flies
For dessert is always love
Higher love, diviner lover
Freedom as the food of the next world
Chew slowly, through the crowds
These faces just like yourself
All emanations of the one
Chew slowly, do not
Strive to make others like yourself
But strive rather to learn more from them.
