Ineffable Name

54

Your ghostly handkerchief
Rubs me in disbelief
As moist as your province
Of erotic dreams

Your Jewish mind
Is too shrewd and logical
For an eternal love-story
I will never meet

One such as you again
In the gold palace of
Lesser conversations
I will go on my merry way

Stitching heaven wherever I roam
For love is intellectual
And my body is not
Pragmatic as a woman

I find miracles without quarrels
Far easier than one who has
Not to be picky, but to be kind
My Messiah is my present love.

Treatise on Attar II

77

The home we seek is in eternity
my spirit has wandered
across endless countries

I have experienced
the pouring of so much grace
to live, to love, and i have looked

everywhere, for Your love –
then suddenly I am filled with it
as a mystic ecstatic with the source

i have felt famine in my veins
and been a slave among peoples
but my prayers have been my light

my poetry the last drop of devotion
that was my strength, when i was weak
my life was the opportunity that was given

if I ignore it, if I waste it –
i will only turn to dust
either way, i will one day live in eternity,

as a spark or a cloud or a gem
or a filament of gold after stars
kiss each other coyly.

Treatise on Rabia al Basr

76In
my soul
There is a temple, a shrine, a garden
where my religion is love
nature, freedom, peace
Where time
Does not have a body
And the future is not
A question of economy, survival, friendship
But where all dissolves
In divinity and connectedness
where ecstasy gets poured into itself
spreading across the galaxies
like a spiritual luminosity
In
my soul
There is a voice, a whisper, a melody
where all art retreats in deeper revelry
and hope
Does not require a family, nation, empire
But can include everything, everyone, all beings.

Treatise on How to Pray

75

When I pray
I speak with my heart’s
Constant Guest
God the host of the galaxy

I measure success differently
I compete with myself
In how well I can encompass others
Rejoice with their spirits

When I pray
I no longer pray for myself
But I seek to expand my heart’s natural
Limits, to enlighten its foundations

Very few seekers can afford
Two Lines to Heaven from their chi
One, from their soul’s unshakable trust
Two, from their spirit’s breath of devotion

Hope has no real intention
But to remind us to be connected
I have a meditation-appointment
With God, in small hours of morning

In late hours of the night
I let in the higher worlds
To swarm in me beyond my imagination
One simple truth to feel alive:

You are bound to know God’s will
If you allow God to become real to you.

Treatise on God’s Plan for Man

74

There are these ultimate absurdities
That make God’s troubles ours
The animal in man never cared for him
The divine in man never won him over yet –

God was not meant to live through man
Man was meant to be mistaken
God does not therefore think of man constantly
Though he loves us equally

Neither of us shall live close to him
So then is it worth to be a sleepless dreamer?
Of God-dreams, unrealized by our orphan-tears?
True, I do not know who I am

So, how shall I ever know my God
There are these ultimate absurdities
That only evolution can solve
The miracle of loving brings us on

To a future where light knows how to brighten
When the Divine in man might liberate
The human from the animal
The soul from the biological machine.

Treatise on Oneness

Molecular Thoughts

Today
I am quietly choosing God’s light
The sunlit path is meant

To illumine me of myself
On meditation-wings
To carry down my own

Heart’s unrelenting purity
Today
God’s forgiveness finds me

No matter where I am
God’s compassion takes me
Where I ought to go

Into your arms, into your mind
With your creativity bright!
Today

I think upon Goddess-power
Her lovely eyes of
Infinity’s satisfaction-smile

She cannot afford to be
As careless with my life
As I am

Today
The new quantum-reality
Is teaching me how to surrender

To its Vision-Light
To its reaches of Supermind
My soul representing

Goddess the Beauty
On earth, with a peace that
Requires no interpretation

And a hope to love the Earth
That needs no explanation
It just is.

Treatise on the Inner Counselor

94

God felt me smile
And gave me Bliss
She is my outer Coach

Therefore I smile as I succeed
She is my inner Coach
Therefore I have danced

Before the infinite proceeds after me
I entertain God on my footsteps clear
And underestimate things such as

Her Compassion-Beauty
And I overestimate Man’s cruelty
But humanity has its own plan

God felt me smile at her fate
And gave a few of us Bliss
With promise-power, warmth

That is spread from generation to generation
I chose not to understand God
But she lived in me anyway

Yesterday’s God had to be reframed
She gave me jokes, cosmic humor
A way out of my little mind:

I am giving God, in lyrical strains
A little problem; my useless life
That listens earnestly to the life of others.

Treatise on Solace

71

God wanted you
To go to Him untouched
But what did you do?
You know!
You went to him
With the final love

That comes from too much suffering
You went to God as a human being
Tired of being good
Tired of the sensation of hope
You felt the breath in you
Was increasing in hesitation
And sleeplessness, so you went

To God, To love you sleeplessly
And it worked!
Like an unfinished Dream of god
You stood, half-perfect
With thoughts that were
An unending Reality of God

You woke up, struck then by
The God-Hour of your species
You took the last step, with
A heart of gratitude
Smooth solace for the chaos

Mistaking earth for Heaven
You loved the world with new eyes.

Treatise on Self-Transcendence

69

I shall show God
By acts of humility
Because you are the Lord of my life
I was built by nature’s finery

God’s Compassion-feet
Thrive in my bones
My blood has soul
My water has spirit

I do not interfere
In God’s funny Affairs
Every day I let Him
Create a new world

Destroy an old world
That is what Divinity does
Changing by God-Satisfaction
Natural laws, so why pray?

I shall show God’s works
By selfless surrender
That is my final act of self-transcendence
To frighten the animal in me

My God is all Justice
To enlighten the human in me
My God is all Compassion
Simplicity, compassion and humility

Enough of God’s Lion-Power
Back to God’s Deer-Speed.

Treatise on Surrender to the Future

68

My Beloved,
I came into the world
With empty hands,
Unaware of what treasures

I might find here –
I cam from God
The Eternal Dreamer
Ready to know my Immortal Lover

She was the happiness-gift
Of a devotion I valued most
She was the bliss-spark
Of a surrender I happened upon

Naturally, as naturally
As I was born to live and die –
My Beloved,
My minds wants to invent

A new God, with pretty new doctrines
But my heart wants to discover
Something eternal, untarnished
By bloody histories, civil unrest

My dear Nature,
Please warm me before
Evolution finds my kind extinct
My gratitude-heart,

Can only bare so much
And I feel your heart
Even in the carelessness of all
We have done, all we do

The miracle of my chase with God
Can only end in the realization
Of your secret wishes
In my descendants.

Treatise on Sri Chinmoy

67

Be universal in your love
For we all come from its being
You will see the universe

To be the picture of your own being
If we call ourselves children
Of God, what is the place

In exploiting each other?
Approach each as a Beloved
For complete and total acceptances

From when we have expertise in empathy
Love being the only wealth
That man absolutely needs

That can heal man absolutely
Love is the only wealth
That God precisely is, since
We all require mercy and poor mysticism!

In underestimating the place of simplicity
In the end of our suffering
Be universal in your love
For it is only in the highest altruism

You are capable, that you attain
Your intended perfection
Try to approach God

With your crying heart, try
To feel the crying heart in others
That you might all approach
The same spiritual consciousness.

Treatise on God II

94 love

Here, bear testimony, you are your own best witness
Do unto others as you
Would have them to do you
Love must be sincere, therefore

Cling to what is good
Be compassionate at all times
Love has no intent to harm
The fulfillment of the law is kindness

Mercy, charity, service, helpfulness
Hope, love and faith together move –
But the greatest of these is love
And Love for God’s work in us

Dear friends, let us love on another
For love comes from God
Everyone who loves has been
Born God and knows God

There is no fear in love, therefore
Perfect love drives out all fear, anxiety
Fear punishes, love gives
Say yes to love, and no to fear

At every juncture of your life
Here, bear testimony, the love in you
Will be your own judge and jury
Great love is not only for self, family, friends

But for all beings, all creatures
There is no chosen people, no right nation
All planets together move in the galaxy
A friend loves at all times, whoever forgets God

That is their concern, for God so loved the world
There we were created to love the world too
No one can serve two masters, so listen
Inside your heart, and serve the true soul

For in thine own conscience thou findst
The truth of thy love, and all fulfillment therein.

Treatise on God

63

And, behold, I am with thee
As the planets live amongst the stars
Behold, I hold thee, as the trees
Keep the Earth together, the air fresh

I am God, nature pure devoid of scripture
I am Love, creative, a power of evolution
I can do everything through
He who gives me strength

I can love everyone through
She who gives me the ability to love
And, behold, I am not alone
For God so loved the world

And we each have a spark of God
And whoever believes in the stars
Shall not perish but have eternal life
For in the stars awaits our destiny

And we know that in all things God works
For the good of those who crave the light
Of the future, do not conform any longer
To the pattern of the past world, it is gone

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything
By prayer and petition, present your love
To the Galaxy, the one you were born into
For it is by grace you can know God

Through faith, and not for yourself,
By the fruit of the spirit in love, joy, peace, patience
Kindness, goodness, faithfulness;
It is the gift of God, therefore I urge you

Brothers, our grace is sufficient to confess
That we want to be part of the new creation
It is love which changes the world, after all,
Keep your love free from the love of money

Live simply, give yourself fully, until the Holy Spirit
Comes unto you, let yourself be a witness
May the God of hope fill you with overflowing trust
Until resurrection finds you ready and purified.

Treatise on Jesus of Nazareth

90

But I say to you, Love your
Enemy as you would your Neighbor
Your Neighbor as you would your Mother

Do not persecute these or yourself
Father who is in heaven; he would not approve
Be compassionate for all creatures

Do not let your hearts be troubled
Trust in yourself, as the universe incarnate
Trust also in others, as if they were you

Ask for it and these be given unto you;
Search for it, and she will find you –
Love, like the universe opens all doors for you

A new command you were given:
Love one another, as nature gave you life
Free of possibility, full of potential

For the universe loved her many children
Eternal life endures, like a lover
Whose objects are not limited, but unlimited

Whose bliss is unconditional, not only for thy family
but I say to you, Love more if you want
To be closer to perfection, keep only possessions

In your heart, that is thy only commandment
For what shall it profit a being, who forgets how to love?

Treatise on Yunus Emre

I tried to make sense of the holy books
Until love arrived,
Then all the scriptures became
A holy single syllable
Her word was “love”

Divine love is the one I need
Day and night I burn –
I read the faces of suffering creatures
To find the lips of thy glory!
My pity would break into an outcry

That went beyond all God’s images
The only source I have left is your love
I find no great joy in being alive
If only to be one drop
That contains an ocean

Each passing day fans and rouses flames
Of the desire to love both worlds
As the same, Heaven and Earth
My abode and my destination
I tired to love all the people of the world

Until I felt you by my side, in everybody
Do not let me wander from your love
Don’t let me leave your door
And if I lose myself
Let me find myself again in You.

62

Treatise on Kahlil Gibran

58

The teacher is who learns from pupils
They are everywhere, emerging out of suffering
Leading you to the threshold of mind
Where all ancestors worked for the same cause
And all descendants unite inevitably

The strongest souls are those who
hold the most love in their service
there are no scars in rebirths, only
karmic residue, personal tendencies
Your living is determined not so much

by what life brings to you as by the
attitude you bring to life, perception is
The quantum variable, in silence’s vein
We find new teachers in purity
New levels of humility, where wisdom

Ceases to worship itself, but melts into spirit
There sweetness of friendships remain
Rising as faith like a knowledge in the heart
Beyond every proof, boundless as unconditional love
Yesterday is but today’s false shadow-memory

And tomorrow is but a Beloved-dream
Faith is the living oasis of the present
The timeless in you is aware of life’s timelessness
You pray in your distress, but you have been here before
We are all a prophet, we’ve all forged bonds of love

Arisen from the same loaf of mind
Alone in the same music of our hours of separation
Give your hearts, risk all to give
For in the moving sea lies the greatest rewards
We wanderers, ever seek the lonelier way
That we might trap divinity in a sunset

On some height we thought we were the first to climb
When love of higher things beckoned us
We followed him, though his ways were hard and steep
Even while the earth sleeps we travel
And give praise to the scattered winds of our legacies.

Treatise on Zhuangzi

55

Once upon a time, I dreampt I was a butterfly
I flew with whatever happened
Letting my mind wander freely
I felt the ultimate in words because of meaning
A unity or forgotten words in silence

I was conscious only of my happiness
I lived in peace and now I fly
I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man
A path is made by walking it
A life is loved by living it

Do not reward or punish yourself
It is the lowest form of education
But rather speak to the Tao in everything
Watch your own and the turmoil of beings
Knowing you will return to the butterfly-state
Kindhearted as a grandmother, amused as an uncle

Happiness is the absence of striving for happiness
To be truly ignorant is enough, be content with your own knowledge
Leap into the boundless and make it your home
Forget the years, forget separation, forget distinctions
And duality, during our dreams we do not know

We are dreaming, we may even dream of
Interpreting a dream, that is why
After a great awakening, we laugh at them.

Treatise on Socrates

54

Knowing nothing, I am wisdom
Beginning to wonder, by all means
Marrying my time on the Earth
contentment being the wealth of my nature
Since all men’s souls are immortal

What should I fear, tell me?
I’ve got a good wife, I’ve become happy
though if I took a lover, it would be
Philosophy, that dead pursuit
Of men who like to admit

That true wisdom is following our nature
Sincerely, God knows best what is
Good for us, and be as a child
For an honest man is always a child
Avoiding the bareness of a busy life

Let him that would move the world
First move himself, becoming one’s own teacher
Wonder is the beginning of wisdom
Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle
The self is its own casing of ignorance

Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events
Weak minds discus people, therefore learn
To gossip of higher stuff, an education of living.

A Treatise on Michelangelo

52

A man paints with his brains
Not with his hands
A woman makes music not with her fingers
But with her heart
Death and love move the artist

We all labour to the genius
Of our own absolute love
But we must learn eternal patience
For faith in oneself is always
the best and safest course

In this brute world of circumstance
Our fate can change in an hour
If we have been pleased with life
We should not be displeased with death
Since all art comes in the end

From the same master
Still then would I hope that
I may always desire more than
I can humanly accomplish, therefore
That the art of God may shine in me

Not for any personal glory but
For the human good, for that spirit
I live and love in God’s peculiar light
And my soul can find no staircase to heaven
Unless it be through Earth’s loveliness.

Treatise on Kongzi (Confucius)

48

Dears, life is really simple
but we insist on complication
Brothers, the will to win or the
desire to succeed is really only
the thirst to realize your full potential

Do not let it blemish your dignity
real knowledge and virtue is
To know the extent of one’s ignorance
and the power of circumstance to make
Another act the way they do

Sisters, silence is a true friend
who will never betray you, should you
need her in the stillness of your soul
find her out, when it is not the time to act

Dears, it does not matter how slowly
you go as long as you do not stop
Find in your hearts the endurance
of the ancients, of ancestors that
we may one day arrive at descendant divinity

to this end we must meditate on good thoughts
on virtues, on right action, on the world at large
the superior person understands the morality
In every instance, the seed of love
that must serve as our final teacher.

Treatise on Sri Aurobindo

46

Hidden in nature is secret God
Inherent in humanity, is a universal being
Children of the future, descendent divinity
Whatever we are now, is just a step –

Spirituality is embedded in our brains
The creative word burns from our soul
To do good in an ordered galaxy
So what is the method of the emergence

Of our own divinity, our higher evolution?
Each of us must work to this aim
That a superman may emerge
Out from our animal ignorance

How to approach the infinite from
A standpoint of freedom and unity
When the world we live in appears
Against the manifestation of a new world

Until we arrive at the solution, we must
Learn to live within, not be shaken by outward
Uncertainty, foolishness, corruption, chaos
True love or knowledge comes from purity and silence.

God Lives in the World like we Do

43

One must be very particular about
Giving everything to the grace
The Universal decides our fate

Through surrender one can realize God
Whatever God might be at the time
A man is truly free when she knows

Her true nature, and follows it –
For to discard our truth would be
To lie to ourselves and deprive the world

Of what we were truly meant to be:
One must be very particular about love
Giving our love to the Divine in us

It’s not a question of desire or beloveds
It’s a question of listening to the Universal
Through selfless work, loving the world
One can talk to God as I’m talking to you.

A Treatise on Ramakrishna

42

The Universal is the goal of all men
They do not know it, though some
Have a sense of it behind
Their universal suffering leads them –

God is of course in all creatures
But all men are not Universal
That is why we suffer so
If you desire to be pure

Find the way to the ultimate surrender
God can be realized through all paths
All religions are true, the roof of the spirit
Is all the same, by any stairs

Stone stairs, wood stairs, bamboo!
Many good sayings are found in holy books
But the Universal belongs to the youth
Pray to the Universal that attachment
To transitory things diminishes
For true comfort is a spiritual condition.

“Morning” Means Living Without Expectation

86

Delayed, till the rest of my life –
My goodness cannot wait
To be spent on the bliss

Of the slow pace of a simple life
Who knows this but
A surrendered face, trusting

The Universe with all that matters
In this imperial route of non-attachment
Like a Buddhist I will strive

To give without asking in return
I have no native town, no home-people
I am but a soul in a form on Earth

A Wonderful rotation of artistic seasons
My “last poems” ended where the silver perished
On my tongue that spoke less and less

The flute of an Autumn morning
It’s all I have to bring today
Delayed, till the rest of my life –

My heart beside the field of all hearts
I throw myself into the river
The river that forgets everything.

Maybe, Perhaps, O’ Alright

34

We will use the subtle color “maybe”
we will write magic like before “perhaps”
finally they, who said
‘We will be haunted by the greatest glory’

remembered, the fruits of their labor
under a blinding light of alphabets
the dreamers choose another reality
we will stay drilling our chorus

a neverland of birds, open palms, psalms
the clear water of fresh thoughts
that chime from the future-grafts
space-time collides with the landscape

of the heart, that spells a figurative unity
across our palette, template, painter’s reference
always a wider frame-of-reference
We will throw divine colors into the mix “maybe”

And love all those who cross our paths “perhaps”
it’s all we can do, they said
‘We will live as if, wildly haunted
By the greatest glory and miracles.

Finally They the Authors of Canvases Let Loose

33

That’s a poet
not an angel
So few are the stars
Chosen ones, destined
for a life of novelty
I strike at winter’s transparency
Immediately schooled with images
the blue bell of winter
flaming in my heart
the blue flower of perennial gardens
growing back through my mind
I have no wings, just plumes
I write with the left hand
of my soul, that’s a poet’s business
the very thought of falling
back to Earth, harsh reality
So few are the dreams that
evade the glowing necessities
Here I love the words which
Silhouette infinity, are they really bright
or only the destined literature
of universals, like a timeless philosophy
that ages well, floating up for air
The light of the clay’s subtle attraction
to always be reborn
until we fall again to the blue stars
That’s a poet
not an angel
those who paint mirrors of lakes
inside their pretty neurons
who live for beauty
as if a flower plucked at sunset
frozen forever in latitudes of sweetness
with the bliss to convey eternity
cloud and swan scenes by a stream
of ancient Earth, before touched by users.

At The Moment you Learn to Use your Hands

28

Teach us then how to beg
And not how to make a fist
I have been a warrior long enough

Teach us too to fold our fingers
In diplomacy’s easy request
Taking defeat out into the open

Where we are all a loser in the game
Of love & survival, all sense the same void –
Where we are married with shared tribulations

Teach us then how to shield a slender fate
To brace a door from a weary storm
Teach us the great cause of loving arms

Open hands that carry our playful travelling
And offer the ultimate grain of our salvation
Like a knot of fingers over-head
To opaque friends that ennoble all shared struggles.

That Faith that Came After Hope Departed

23

I have seen faith, felt her
Gently on my face like morning light

I have gazed into her
Naked outright sun like a child
The word ‘faith’ means
An experience of elevation
To that which is properly invisible
A dewdrop or a floating leaf

The yearning for horizons unclear
Even if you dreamed, with open eyes
The faith of the future would
Persuade you that something special

Is near, a luminous speckled light
From some mysterious source

I have seen faith, felt her
Like water on my thirsty lips
I have thought her in my mind
Bringing me closer to nature

Where a brief second seemed
To last a year, I have been that flower
That forgot how not to bloom.

A Moment of Creative Seeing

20

I bring three things for an impossible meeting
To the workshop of your mind
Reproduced like old art books
On the coffee table never opened

Strength, skill and beauty
Above all, the reminder of human spirit
The easy gait of a lifetime of learning
I bring to you the philosophy of self-expression

The movement of harmony
In lost words, triumphant until the end of the world
Ready-made like language, and alien
As the moment of the surprise of enchantment

I bring three things for an impossible meeting
The shimmering of deftness in the brain
Reproduced like ancient books
In the library in an age where we no long read

Strength, skill and beauty, above all strength
The will to create a new world at every meeting
With the previous construct of reality.

Fragments Beneath Eternal Trees

16

I am a fragment on the white clouds
Of Apollo, Vishnu see himself in me
I am the Autumn silver of first snow
Washed on my morning face

I am the stubborn silence that accompanies
Too much happiness, the foreign
Country love. I am the last request
Of a golden heart gladdened to be poor

That the purity persists despite that
With a prayer book full of lyrics
Sutras of the melted precipice of self
I am a fragment of all that was once divine

Set in empty volumes of diamond flesh
I am the end of an invisible dynasty
Poetry dies with me, as a window
To the gray-maned mythology of italics
Where words became monuments of Autumn herself.
