The Space where Light Initiates

14

I carry in my heart space

Not time, not memory, not love

Space as wide as the universe

Where life can flourish from

Star to sacred star, light to holy light

The cosmos is a public and interior

Space, the meadow where

Flower are stars, and gardens are planets

I carry light in my mind

Time is only the distance between

Point and point, species and species

Intelligence and evolution guiding

The cycles of energy, the gases and elements

I carry the universe in my eyes

Can you see it, does it reach you?

Until we learn to use space-time

And until the stars join in a necklace

Of golden flourishing, I will wait

Suspecting the billions of years

Have been an illusion, an initiative

Of unity, that witnesses the universe

As one living thriving organism.

The Flyers

The Winter night’s moon
Is wet and dangling all silver
Half-plucked from the
Eyes of the stars

It’s a huge wounded sky
With supernova celebrations
Politics of worlds may continue
And a bit of human music

But evolution cares about
The end-game, the empowerment
Of life at its height
In its golden ages

The occasional colonization
Of stars by mortals
Or by their machines
The grasp of angels to

The oxygen and water-worlds
Our curiosity was not unlike
The first ones, with gleaming hands
Each new species makes its way

Out from the confines of its
Civil war and ruined economies
As if they were the first.

Legends of Extinct Life

I pressed your dawns
Smooth open like marble
Touching your secret tunnels

Like the moisture of gold
with night-eyes hungered
For the fragrance

Of other strange worlds
I left the waters of childhood
For the earth-last lust

Of the home-star, Sol
The wind interrogated me
With the fire-blue sense

Of the open skies
I kissed the stone like
Autumn gardens

And hinted at the blooms
Of the clothes of our roots
The thicket of passion

Where ferocious intelligence
Seared a road across the impossible
I pushed sunsets until

The earths shock
My opportunity was a brief
Window of selfish centuries

Foam covered mornings
Which fled as fast as finite things
As the hips of your dark

Familiar clay fell back into the earth
I understood love, only
By the filter of time’s volcanoes

The moist half-open darkness
Of the brutal law of stars
Like a floating haiku
Of drifting kissing potential.

Beholding the Lovely body of a Sunbeam

71

I yearn for completion
In the abstract tapestries
A beauty as soft as music, as wood

That sends a freshness
against the waves
of lights from a distant region

of the Universe, the shape
A new measure of mind
I yearn for completion

In truth and beauty
Of another world, with
The fragrance of unbroken springtime!

I yearn for some language of substance
Beyond the biological cravings
of flesh, sniffing twilight

the pangs of the hot heart
Which hunts the barrens
For some savage harvest
Beyond color, above sound.

Song to Orion

Orion

Great stars of white frost/
Ancient beginnings of Orion’s Belt
Landscapes of crystal
*
Fish the darkness of my psychic
Road of dawns, that opens new worlds
Rock salt and iceberg Cosmos

Pleistocene padlock instinct
Primal intelligence of green vitality
Give me rebirth, like springtide’s revelry
*
Great noble stars of whitening transparency
Melt the fine dust of my humanity
Bring me the end of the world, that I might

Truly look in the mirror as if
For the last time, and sparkle with you
Star on star, body to body, hope to hope
*
That I might drink the Galactic wine/
In a network of supremely loving satellites
Great stars of white eternal frost

You know best, I am only a watcher
I will see only gold, in your darkness fluff
For in the eye of the behold, is only racing light
*
I await my Beloved, as of old, in calm divinity
Great stars of the Multitude of Answers
All possible truths assault me, like moonstones and vodka.
